Liposuction Q & A

What happens during my surgical liposuction consultation?

During your surgical liposuction consultation at Winds of Change Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Sumpter discusses your concerns with you and evaluates the areas where you want fat removal. Then, she creates a customized surgery plan and explains what you can expect during and after liposuction. If you're ready to proceed, you can schedule a surgery date during your consultation.

Am I a good liposuction candidate?

The best liposuction candidates maintain a healthy weight, or close to it. Liposuction might be an ideal solution if you're at a healthy weight but still retain fatty deposits that don't improve with diet and exercise. Good skin tone is also important if you're considering liposuction. Your skin must be elastic enough to adjust to the fat removal without major sagging.

While it's an excellent way to remove fat, liposuction doesn't remove extra skin. So, patients with excess skin aren't ideal candidates. In that situation, you may find that an abdominoplasty, thigh lift, arm lift, mommy makeover, or other procedure that removes loose skin may be a better option or best combined with liposuction to get the results you want!

Where on my body can I get liposuction?

Nearly anywhere on your body! Liposuction is a good option for tummy fat, thigh fat, arm fat, hip fat, and fat in just about any other place. Dr. Sumpter is a highly experienced cosmetic surgeon who skillfully treats even the small and difficult-to-reach areas.

How does liposuction work?

Dr. Sumpter performs liposuction while you're under general anesthesia, which means you sleep through the surgery. She makes very small incisions in the treatment area. A solution containing local anesthetic and tumescent fluid is introduced beneath the area of concern to help minimize bleeding, bruising, and overall patient discomfort. A cannula is inserted through the skin and gently removes fat cells.

Dr. Sumpter carefully controls the amount of fat removal and removal speed to ensure an optimal outcome. The total amount of fat removed is based on the size of the treatment area, so it can vary from a few ounces to a couple of pounds.

What is liposuction recovery like?

Although the fat's gone, you might not see the results right away due to normal tissue swelling. Dr. Sumpter recommends wearing a compression garment for up to two weeks following liposuction surgery. This helps minimize swelling and encourages your skin to conform to the new slimmer dimensions.

After liposuction, patients usually resume light activity within a week or two. You can likely resume full activity, including exercise, at approximately four to six weeks after surgery.
