While many women are investigating ways to increase or enhance their breast size, there is a significant population of women who seek breast reduction. Heavy or disproportional large breasts can be painful and cause other physical problems.
Unwanted larger breast volume can be a burden and can result in physical symptoms such as:
- Back pain
- Breast pain or mastodynia
- Breathing problems
- Grooves in the shoulders from bra straps
- Neck pain
- Skin irritation
In addition to the physical, the emotional aspect of macromastia (increased breast volume) can be devastating. Women are often embarrassed by their breast size, which contributes to an overall feeling of being unattractive. Large breast volume can attract discomfort and unwanted attention - especially in younger age groups.
Women with increased breast size are often self conscious and avoid certain situations where the enlarged breasts are more uncomfortable and are brought to the attention of others. This may include avoiding social gatherings such as swimming or exercise.
Lastly, women with disproportionate breasts become frustrated with finding clothes that fit their body properly.
Breast reduction surgery can be one of the most rewarding for both the patient and the surgeon. In many cases, these women wait years to correct this issue. There are literally dozens of operations and variations of surgical techniques to choose from, each being tailored for the individual patient and her specific problem. In a breast reduction procedure, excess breast tissue is removed and the breasts are reshaped.
In some cases, liposuction may be used in breast reduction.
During a breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, excess fat, tissue and skin is removed from the breasts. The nipple and areola are moved higher on the breast during the procedure. The result is smaller, lighter and firmer breasts. Be it a breast reduction or a breast reduction coupled with a lift procedure, the results are often amazing.
A breast lift procedure may take between two to five hours and can be performed with or without a simultaneous augmentation (implant) and with or without a breast reduction.
Patients can expect mild to moderate discomfort and approximately one to two weeks of recovery time.
