Liposuction

Liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure today. It is performed equally on men and women of all age groups and varied socioeconomic levels. The benefits of liposuction are: the removal of fatty tissue with less surgery time; smaller scars; and generally costs less than more invasive surgical procedures.

Liposuction removes the fatty tissue from the body to establish a more uniform contour. It is often the answer for patients who have tried dieting and exercising, but have a concentration of fatty tissue they are unable to lose through these means.

In recent years, the addition of the tumescent technique has made liposuction safer. Tumescence is a process in which the fat is injected with a solution containing local anesthesia and electrolytes. This helps to minimize bleeding and discomfort.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is close to his or her ideal body weight and has one or two areas of focused fat. Liposuction is not a weight loss program and does not take the place of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Liposuction is unique in that it appeals to nearly everyone equally, men and women without any distinction between age groups or other demographic data.

Liposuction is commonly performed on:

  • Abdomen / flanks / waist
  • Back
  • Breasts
  • Calves
  • Chin
  • Face / neck
  • Hips
  • Inner knees
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Upper arms

Several areas may be treated during one procedure provided Dr. Sumpter feels it is a safe option for you.

Some people with a double chin or sagging skin in the jaw line may opt for facial liposuction. These deposits of fatty tissue are often resistant to exercise and weight loss. No considered true facial plastic surgery by medical terms, this option may postpone the need for a face lift for many years.

There are very few people in today's society that would not benefit from a liposuction procedure.

A liposuction procedure may take from two to four hours depending upon the areas being treated. The recovery process may include one to two weeks of swelling and bruising. A patient may return to work within one week.

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure or treatment, you should thoroughly discuss your expectations and the result you are looking for with the doctor. During a consultation, Dr. Sumpter will discuss every detail of the process with you including downtime and recovery, as well as mention optional treatments, so that you may decide what is the best course of action for yourself.
