HOUSTON - Dr. Kristi Sumpter announced that Winds of Change Cosmetic Surgery Specialists added the highly anticipated Restylane, the latest advance in the battle against wrinkles, to its list of patient services. This "fountain of youth" medical cosmetic product can be used to soften lines, increase lip fullness or smooth and lift facial folds, such as deep smile lines. Arriving for the first time in medical offices across the country, Restylane was approved by the FDA for the cosmetic treatment of facial wrinkles and folds in December.
"The product is a significant advancement in cosmetic fillers," said Dr. Sumpter. "It is a biodegradable substance identical to one that is naturally found in the body, so the body naturally absorbs it once it breaks down. It produces a great, almost immediate benefit and lasts six to 12 months, more than doubling the result of similar treatments. Patients have asked about it for more than a year, given its reported success worldwide. There have been several accounts in the media of people going to Europe or Canada to get it."
Restylane is administered through local injection to the desired area, similar to Botox or other cosmetic fillers such as collagen and Cymetra. It is the first FDA-approved filler made of a synthetic, biodegradable hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found throughout the body. It works by adding volume to the skin. Because of its makeup, Restylane does not require a pre-treatment skin test. It has been used in more than 60 countries outside of the United States since 1996. Canada approved its use in 1998.
In 2002, more than 1.5 million Americans sought treatment of wrinkles through injected treatments and approximately 5 million Americans had non-surgical cosmetic procedures according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery.
Winds of Change Cosmetic Surgery Specialists was founded by Dr. Kristi Sumpter. The practice provides a comfortable, positive setting while offering responsible, compassionate care for women and men interested in cosmetic surgery procedures and treatments.
